Metamorphose II

The second of three prints completed by Escher depicting a number of continuously metamorphosing images. The woodcut was in black, green and brown, printed from twenty-three blocks on three combined sheets.

"A dynamic characteristic is obtained by a succession of figures in which changes of form appear gradually. We have repeatedly pointed out the difference between a series of film images projected cinematographically and the series of a regular plane division, which are portrayed in finished form next to one another on a strip of paper. Still the element of the passage of time appears in both" M.C.E.

Metamorphose III was commissioned for the Kerkplein Post Office, The Hague, in 1968. It spans 680 cm and was printed from thirty-three blocks.
